A waypoint is a named place you want to find again: fuel, camp, a gate, a hazard, a view.

INVIA attaches waypoints to the things that need them, routes, rides and collections, so a waypoint travels with whatever it is attached to. It goes into your library, onto a shared link, into a GPX file, and onto a Garmin.

The kinds of point on a route#

Route points never leave the builder, because their only job is to shape the line, so you will not see one in the Waypoints list, in a GPX file, or on a Garmin. The shape those clicks give the route is exported in full, which means the route you download follows the path you drew.

A waypoint takes one of seven types, Fuel, Camp, Vista, Hazard, Food, Service, or Custom, and each type draws its own marker so you can read the map without opening every place. A waypoint shows in the sidebar's Waypoints list, on the elevation profile, and in every export, so it is still there when you download the route or send it to a Garmin.

Drop a place beside the route#

Off route (marker only, don't reroute to it) is checked by default, so dropping a place marks the map without changing the line you have already built. Most dropped places therefore become pins.

1. Drop the POI on the map. The panel that opens is headed Add Waypoint.
2. Leave the box checked to get a pin, because a pin marks the place and leaves the route as it is.
3. Uncheck the box to get a waypoint, then press Add. INVIA inserts it into the nearest segment so the route runs through it.

The line redraws in front of you when you press Add, because INVIA slots the place into the nearest stretch of route and rebuilds the route through it at once. The line moves out to reach the place and the route's distance changes with it, so Undo puts the previous line back if the new shape is not the one you wanted.

Edit a waypoint#

1. Click a waypoint in the sidebar's Waypoints list. The map flies to it, so you can see where it sits on the line before you change anything.
2. Edit its name, type and notes.

Right-click a marker on the map for the same editor, which saves you hunting through the list for a place you can already see.

Detach, Detour and Trim#

Detach turns a waypoint into a pin, so you keep the place on the map without the route running through it. You will find it in the builder sidebar's waypoint editor, beside Delete and Save. The waypoint leaves the Waypoints list and appears in the Pins list, and INVIA does not delete it.

The route is rebuilt without it straight away, because detaching takes the place out of the list of points the line has to reach. The line stops going out of its way to that place, so the route's shape and distance change to what they would be without it, and Undo puts the old line back.

Detour and Trim replace a section of the route, so anything you named inside that section is no longer on the line INVIA has just built. Any named waypoint inside that section becomes a pin. INVIA does not delete it, and it is in the Pins list under the name you gave it.

To make a pin a waypoint again, drop the place once more with Off route (marker only, don't reroute to it) unchecked, which puts the route back through it.

How a waypoint is stored#

Each route and each ride carries its own copy of its waypoints, so work you do on one route never changes another. Each copy is a snapshot of the place as you added it, which is why an edit reaches one copy at a time.

Rename a waypoint on one route and only that route changes. Every other route keeps the old name, because each route holds its own copy, and both routes still work with neither name lost. To change the name on every copy, use rename-everywhere in the library. Waypoint library and clean-up.

Remove a waypoint from a route's page and it comes off that route only, because the page edits that route's copy. The waypoint stays on your other routes and in your collections, so nothing you filed elsewhere changes, and you can open one of those routes to see it still listed there.

On the item page#

The Waypoints (N) section lists Start, Finish and every named waypoint, and clicking one flies the map to it so you can check the place against the line.

The Start and Finish rows carry no pencil and no remove button, because they are the route's own end points and the page keeps them that way. Pressing either row still flies the map to its point, which is all those two rows do.

Owners get + Add, which offers two ways to put a waypoint on this route.

INVIA never prints that 1.5 kilometers on screen, and each row carries its own distance from the line instead, in meters below a kilometer and in kilometers above it. Those distances stay metric whatever you set your units to, so the shortest figure in the list is the place closest to your line.

If nothing you saved is within 1.5 kilometers of the line, the page says No saved waypoints near this route.

The route and its existing waypoints are unchanged, so the message is about distance and not about a fault in your route. Use Drop on map instead.

The pencil renames a waypoint, so you can fix a name without removing the waypoint and adding it back. It renames this route's copy only, which the app tells you twice, because the button reads Rename on this route and saving answers Waypoint renamed on this route. Your library row and the copies on your other routes, rides and collections keep the old name.

Remove a waypoint from a route#

1. Click the X button beside the waypoint.
2. Read the question Remove this waypoint? and the line It'll be taken off this route only.
3. Confirm.

After you confirm:

• The Waypoints (N) section no longer lists that waypoint, and the count drops by one.
• Copies on your other routes and in your collections are untouched, because each route holds its own copy.
• To put the waypoint back on this route, use + Add again.
