Builder: styling and options

Styling is set on the layer, so every track in that layer takes the same look until you recolor tracks yourself. A Garmin draws a fixed set of line styles and colors, which is why the builder offers what the device can show rather than a free color picker.

Per layer#

• Arrows draws chevrons along the line so you can read which way the route runs on a small screen. Solid draws a plain line instead.
• Width sets how thick the line is drawn, and it appears only when the style is Solid, so a layer set to Arrows has no width setting at all. The map you build sits on top of the Garmin's own map, so a wider line is easier to follow and a narrower one leaves more of the base map showing. The slider moves in steps of two from 5 upward, so the widths you can pick are the odd numbers, 5, 7, 9 and so on up to 31.
• → Fwd or ← Rev sets which way the arrows point. Direction can also be set on a single track, so one track can point the opposite way to the rest of its layer.

A Width change shows on the Garmin only after you send the map again, because the map already on the device was built with the old width. That send builds the map fresh rather than reusing the file already built for the design, which means you wait for a build rather than the quick resend an unchanged design gets.

Colors#

A Garmin draws seven colors natively: Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black. INVIA offers those seven and nothing else, so what you pick is what the device shows and there is no color to lose in the transfer.

Select recolors many tracks at once, which saves setting a color on every track in a long list.

• Every track you select takes the new color.
• Tracks you did not select keep the color they had.

Color priority#

Two tracks in a layer can share the same road, and the Garmin draws one line there rather than two, so one of the colors has to win the shared stretch. Color priority, top wins overlaps decides which one.

What you get:

• The color higher in the priority list keeps the shared road.
• The lower color is trimmed where the two tracks run together, which is why a track can look shorter on the device than it does in the builder.
• Both tracks are still in the layer and both are still built. Only the drawn color changed.
• To give the shared road to the other color, move that color above the winner in the priority list, then build again.

Options#

• Pins on map (.img) bakes your waypoints into the map file as pins with names, so they are drawn with the map and need nothing else loaded on the Garmin.
• Device GPX (real symbols) writes a companion waypoints file, which means your pins arrive as real Garmin waypoints with proper symbols that you can search for and navigate to.
