Tabs, search and chips

The Explore sidebar reads the map as a list, so its tabs, its search box, the Heatmap switch and its chip rows describe the patch of map on screen rather than your library.

Tabs#

Each tab answers a different question about the same patch of map, so pick the one that matches what you are looking for.

Each tab carries a count of what is in the current view, and the list refreshes as you pan and zoom, so the count always describes the map on screen now. Routes are ranked by distance to the center of the map, with your favourites first, which puts the route nearest the middle of the screen at the top of the list.

A route that leaves the view#

The list holds only what is in the current view. Pan a route off the map and it leaves the Routes list, drops out of the count on the Routes tab and stops being drawn as a line. The route is not deleted, because the sidebar follows the map view rather than your library. Pan back and it is listed again, with your favourites unchanged.

Pan or zoom until the route is in view once more, or type the place into Search a place… so the map flies there for you.

Search#

Search a place… flies the map to a town, a trailhead or an address, which saves dragging the map across the country to reach it.

The map flies there, and the tabs, the counts and the lists then describe the new view, so the sidebar is about the place you searched for rather than the one you left.

Heatmap#

Heatmap switches the glow between two kinds of line, so you can look at where routes have been planned or at where riders have already ridden.

Zoomed out#

Below about zoom 7 the map draws the glow only, because the route lines are fully transparent down there. Individual route lines are not drawn below about zoom 7. The list explains that the heat map shows activity and asks you to zoom in. The tabs, the chips and Search a place… stay on screen, so you can search or filter while you zoom.

Zoom in past about zoom 7 and the individual lines draw, which fills the list with the routes under the map.

The glow when you zoom in#

The glow does not stop when you zoom in. It stays on as a soft bloom under the route lines all the way in, so a busy area still reads as heat at close zooms. What fades out just past about zoom 7 is the sharp core inside the glow, because that core is drawn from a coarse shape that would look angular up close.

Chips#

All, Routes and Rides filter the list and the map together, so what you read in the sidebar and what you see on the map are always the same set.

Two more rows appear when the view holds enough variety for them to sort anything: activity chips, and the difficulty chips Easy, Mod, Hard, Extreme. The activity row appears only when the routes in view carry at least two different activity types, and the difficulty row only when they carry at least two different difficulty ratings. With one value in view there is nothing for a row to sort, so the row is left off. Both rows are derived from the routes in view, which is why they come and go as you pan.

No activity row and no difficulty row#

When the view lacks that variety there is nothing for those rows to sort. The difficulty row is not on screen. The activity row is not on screen either, while All, Routes and Rides stay where they are, because those three do not depend on what the view holds.

Every route in view is still in the list and filtering by All, Routes or Rides still works, so the two extra ways to narrow are all you lose. Pan or zoom to a view that holds more kinds of route and both rows come back, because both are derived from the routes in view.

Both rows are counted after All, Routes or Rides has been applied, so pressing Routes or Rides can take a row off screen on its own. That happens when the narrower set holds only one activity or one difficulty, and pressing All counts the row against everything in view again.

A chip hides the rest#

Press Routes and the rides leave the list, because a chip filters what is shown rather than what you own. The map and the list show the same filtered set, so nothing you filtered out is sitting unseen on the map. The routes and rides are still on INVIA. Press All to list routes and rides together again.

Empty states#

Both messages describe the view rather than your library, so the way out of either is to change the view. Zoomed out, zoom in until the individual lines draw. With nothing matching, press All or pan to another area.

Riders#

The Riders tab lists every rider with public content in view. Each row carries the rider's counts and a link to their profile, so you can go from a route on the map to the rider who shared it. A rider with no public content in view is not listed, which is the same rule the Routes and Collections tabs follow.

The friend button#

The rider row has no friend button, because the friend button appears only for accounts with the social beta. The friend button is the only part of the row the social beta adds, so the rider's name, their counts and the profile link are on the row on every account. The Riders tab still lists every rider with public content in view, so the ranking is unchanged. Open the rider's profile from the row, because that link reaches the rider whether or not the account has the social beta.

Collections#

The Collections tab lists the public collections that contain anything in view. Each row carries the cover, the route count, the owner and the difficulty, so you know what a collection holds before you open it.

A collection that is not listed#

A collection with nothing in view is not listed, and a collection that is not public is not listed either, because this tab follows the map view and shows only what riders have shared. The collection is unchanged and every other collection with something in view is still listed, so it is the list that follows the view rather than the collection. Pan or zoom until one of that collection's routes is in view and the collection is listed again.
