Waypoints on the device

The Waypoints panel lists the saved places that are already on your Garmin. Importing them copies those places into your INVIA waypoint library, so they stop living only on the Garmin. Once a place is in your library you can rename it, file it and send it back out with a route.

The panel is part of the Device page. It appears when a connected Garmin holds at least one saved place, which is why you see no panel on a Garmin with no places saved on it.

The panel#

The header reads Waypoints · N, where N is the number of saved places INVIA found on the Garmin, and pressing that header opens and closes the list. The list is grouped by the file each waypoint came from, because a Garmin keeps its waypoints inside files rather than one pin at a time.

Import all sits beside the header and works whether the list is open or closed, so you can save everything without expanding the list first. The other controls sit above the file groups and appear once the list is open, because they act on what you tick.

Importing#

1. Press Import all to save every device waypoint.
2. Or select waypoints first, then press Import N to save only those.

Import copies. Nothing is removed from the Garmin. Every waypoint you imported is still on the device and still in the Waypoints panel, which means you can import before a ride without changing what the Garmin shows you on the trail.

The message at the end of the import names how many waypoints were saved and how many were skipped, so you know why fewer were saved than the Garmin holds.

Waypoints you already have#

A waypoint that is already in your waypoint library is skipped. It is not saved a second time, so importing after every ride leaves your library free of repeats.

INVIA treats a device waypoint as one you already have when both of these are true:

• It is within 15 meters of a waypoint in your waypoint library.
• Its name agrees with that waypoint, or its name is generic.

Both lines have to hold, so two differently named places at one spot are both kept, while a device pin carrying a generic name still matches the place you already named there.

A skip changes nothing on either side, because the waypoint in your waypoint library is left as you have it and the one on the Garmin is left where it is. The message names how many were skipped, which is why the saved count reads lower than the number of waypoints on the Garmin.

There is nothing to do about a skip. Re-import after every ride. Re-importing never creates duplicates. The pins that land are the ones you marked since the last import, which is why the count after a long trip is short.

Region#

Each imported waypoint gets its region filled in automatically, so you can filter your waypoint library by area later rather than typing a region onto every pin yourself. INVIA fills regions in batches while the import runs, so a long list takes a moment to finish. The region is stored with the waypoint, and your waypoint library filters on it.

Waypoint-only files#

A device file that holds only waypoints and no line is filed into your waypoint library. A Garmin photo-waypoint export is one of those files.

You get no empty route from such a file. The places land in your waypoint library and nothing is added to your route list, because a file with no line has no route to draw.

Sending waypoints#

Waypoints travel to the device with the route or collection that carries them, as saved places, so sending a route puts its pins on the Garmin at the same time.

To send a group on its own, open your waypoint library and press Send this group to device.

Deleting a waypoint file on the device#

Deleting a waypoint file on the device never removes anything from your waypoint library. The two copies are separate, so the Garmin loses the file while INVIA keeps the places you imported.

Garmin stores waypoints inside files rather than one pin at a time, which is why the delete works on a whole file. You cannot delete one waypoint on its own. The delete removes the whole file. Open the group and read the names first, because the file may hold pins you still want on the Garmin.

Deleting a waypoint file is a Pro feature, and the control is in Advanced: Device files.

What you see after the delete:

• The waypoint file is gone from the device.
• Every waypoint that file held is gone from the device with it.
• The file's group is gone from the Waypoints panel. Its pins are gone from the device map.

What still works:

• Your waypoint library is unchanged. Every waypoint you imported is still there.
• Those places go back to the Garmin whenever you send them again from your waypoint library.

The delete cannot be undone. Import the waypoints before you delete the file, so the places survive even though the file does not.
