Save dialog, Route View and leaving

What you type in the save dialog is what everyone sees. Save Route in the Toolbox opens it, and your entries are what your library, Explore and every route card show. Name and describe a route now and you can still pick it out of a long list months later.

The Save Route dialog#

Difficulty and surface are your own ratings, because how a trail rides is not something a drawn line can tell anyone. INVIA never computes them. Set them from what you saw on the ground, so the next rider who opens the route gets your judgement rather than a guess.

The footer button#

Update Route replaces the saved route with your edit, so your library still holds one route and the version you started from is gone.

Save as New keeps the original and saves the edit as a second route. Your library then holds two routes, which is the choice to make when you are trying a detour and still want the ride exactly as you rode it.

Either way the toast reads Route saved.

What is stored#

Saving keeps more than the line you drew, so the route can be listed, searched and sent to your GPS later without you entering anything a second time. You supply some of it and INVIA works the rest out from the line, which is why the distance and the climb appear without you measuring anything.

• What you entered: the name, the description, the activity, your difficulty and surface ratings, the route color, the visibility and the collection.
• What INVIA works out from the line: the distance, the elevation gain, a ride-time estimate and a thumbnail generated from the line.
• The route itself: the road-snapped geometry, and your named waypoints and pins, as stops.

The ride-time estimate#

The ride time shown with your route, and stored with it when you save, is the distance divided by one average speed for the activity you chose. It moves only when the distance or the activity changes, because nothing else feeds it.

Climbing, surface, weather and the stops you plan are not counted, which means a steep dirt loop and a flat run of the same length get the same estimate on the same activity. Treat the figure as a rough guide rather than a schedule, and set the activity before you save so the stored estimate matches the machine you are riding.

Saving with no connection#

Saving still works when you are offline. The route is kept on this device and the toast says so, which means the ride you planned at a trailhead with no signal is not lost. Nothing is discarded and the builder is unchanged, so every other tool carries on as normal.

Open your library once you are back on a signal and check that the route is listed, so you know the offline save reached it.

Route View#

Press Cancel Edit on a saved route and the builder returns to view mode, which turns the sidebar into the Route View panel. This is the panel you use to send, export or delete a route, rather than to change the line it follows.

The Route View panel holds these items.

• A back button.
• The route's color dot and name.
• A details card with Activity Type, Distance, Elevation Gain, Difficulty and Collection.
• Edit Route and New Route.
• Export GPX, when export is allowed.
• Send to Garmin.
• Delete.

When Send to Garmin is disabled#

Send to Garmin is disabled until a Garmin device is connected. The button is greyed out and reads Connect Garmin on Device page, because INVIA has nowhere to put the file until it can see a GPS.

The route is saved and unchanged. Every other button on the Route View panel still works, so you can export the file or reopen the route in the builder while the Garmin is unplugged. Connect your Garmin on the Device page, then return to the Route View panel and the button is live.

Copying another rider's route#

Load a public route into the builder and save it as new, and INVIA records where the route came from, so the copy always shows who drew it. The copy's page shows Imported from and the original rider.

Export GPX is not offered on the copy. The route file belongs to the rider who built it, which is why the download is missing rather than broken. Your copy still works. It sits in your library like any route you built, and to get it onto your GPS you use Send to Garmin instead of the file download.

Editing after saving#

Everything except the line is edited on the route's item page, so you never open the builder to correct a name or a rating.

Library cards carry two of these shortcuts. The pencil renames the route and the pill changes who sees it, so a quick rename or a switch to public never needs the item page at all.

Exporting#

Export GPX sits on the route's page and on library cards, and INVIA asks you to confirm before the download starts, so a stray click does not put a file in your downloads folder.

Export works on every plan and on every route you built or imported yourself, because work you created is yours to take out of INVIA whenever you want it somewhere else. A GPX you imported from your own computer counts as your work, so it exports again like anything you drew.

Export is withheld on routes saved from another rider, which covers four ways a route reaches your library without you drawing it.

• A route you saved from Explore.
• A copy you took out of a collection.
• A route shared into a group.
• A Save as New copy of another rider's route.

Two permissions open a route you did not create. The rider who shared it can allow downloads when they share it, and an event organizer can allow participant downloads for their event, so the file reaches you with the owner's consent.

Direction arrows are an option when you send a route to a device. They are not offered on file export, so a GPX you download carries the line without them.

Another rider's route in the builder#

Add another rider's route to the builder alongside yours and export is withheld for everything in it, your own route included, because the builder session counts as theirs from then on. Export GPX is not offered while that route is loaded, and the message reads Saved from another rider - export not available.

Clearing the builder and starting again is what lifts it, so save your own route before you bring another rider's line in beside it.

Leaving the Plan tab#

Leaving the Plan tab with unsaved work asks Leave the route builder? first, because work in the builder stays on screen until you save it. You get three choices.

• Cancel closes the dialog. You stay in the route builder and the route is as it was.
• Clear route discards the unsaved changes. The builder is empty when you return to the Plan tab. Your saved routes are untouched, because clearing only affects the builder.
• Keep active leaves the route in the builder, so it is still there when you come back to plan the rest of it.

Loading another route over unsaved work#

INVIA asks Replace current route? and warns Your unsaved changes will be lost. Confirm, and the unsaved route leaves the builder and the route you picked loads in its place.

Your saved routes are untouched. Only the unsaved work in the builder goes, so the most you can lose is whatever you drew since your last save. To keep that work, press Cancel and save the route first.

INVIA never clears a route without asking, which is why every one of these paths puts a dialog in front of you first.
