Send GPX to a Garmin Oregon

The GPX folder on a Garmin Oregon is Garmin/GPX. The Oregon 600 series and the Oregon 700 series mount as a USB drive, so there is nothing to switch on first. A volume named GARMIN appears on your computer, and the route file belongs in the GPX folder inside Garmin. You never open that folder yourself, because INVIA writes the route file into it over the same USB cable, from a browser tab.

Where route files go on an Oregon#

That layout belongs to the handheld Oregon rather than to every Garmin, because automotive Garmins and the Tread family keep route files at the top of internal storage instead. Copied advice sends people to Garmin/NewFiles, Garmin/Courses or Garmin/Tours, which come from cycling computers and watches, so a route file left in one of those never reaches the Oregon's list. On an Oregon 600 series or an Oregon 700 series, put the route file in Garmin/GPX.

Send a route file to the Oregon from your browser#

1. Plug the Oregon into the computer with a USB cable and let it power on, because it then mounts on its own as a drive named GARMIN with nothing to set on the Oregon.
2. Open INVIA in Chrome or Edge and go to the Device tab.
3. On the status card, which reads No Garmin connected, press USB drive rather than File transfer (MTP), because an Oregon connects as a drive. The card changes to Finding your device… and reads Looking for your Garmin drive. It connects on its own once it mounts.
4. Wait. The first time, the card holds for a moment and then reads Almost there.
5. Press Select my Garmin drive →, then click GARMIN in the sidebar of the window that opens, in Finder on a Mac or File Explorer on Windows, and press Select. After this first pairing the drive reconnects on its own, with no picker.
6. Choose what to send. Two buttons appear once the Oregon is connected: press From INVIA for a saved route, ride or collection, or From computer to load a .gpx file off your machine. Every route and ride card in your library also carries Send to Device.
7. In the SEND TO DEVICE dialog, check the name, pick Internal or SD Card, set Directional arrows to Off, Forward or Reverse, then press Send.

A memory card fitted in the Oregon mounts as its own volume, so INVIA lists SD Card beside Internal and you pick which one receives the route file. With no memory card fitted, the route file goes to internal storage, so there is nothing to choose.

What you see after the send#

• The status card shows the Oregon's name with a Drive badge and a Disconnect button, which is how you confirm the Oregon is still connected.
• The card lists the storage it found, which is Internal on its own, plus SD Card when a memory card is loaded.
• The card shows Add memory card when only one storage is listed, so fit a memory card in the Oregon to get the second choice.
• Everything already on the Oregon is read and drawn on the map, so you see the new route beside what was there before.
• The route file appears in the On Device list. That is your confirmation that it landed.
• ↺ Refresh reads the tracks off the Oregon again whenever you want to check.

Eject the GARMIN drive before you unplug the USB cable, as with any USB drive, so the last write finishes.

The Oregon does not list the route file#

The route file transferred and the Oregon does not show it. Three causes account for almost all of these, and each one puts the file somewhere the Oregon never reads.

A send cut short by the cable leaves nothing for you to delete first, because the route file only takes its place in Garmin/GPX once the whole file has been written. Plug the Oregon back in and send the same route again, which writes over any earlier file of that name.

What is still there:

• The route is still in your INVIA library. Send it again.
• Everything else already on the Oregon is untouched, because a send adds a file rather than replacing what is there.
• Press ↺ Refresh after each attempt so INVIA reads the Oregon again.

Copying the route file by hand#

The Oregon mounts as a drive, so you can copy the route file over yourself when you need to.

1. Open GARMIN.
2. Open the Garmin folder.
3. Open the GPX folder.
4. Drag the .gpx file in.

Use this path on a computer without Chrome or Edge, since those are the browsers a drive connection needs. The browser path removes the two steps people get wrong, because INVIA picks the folder for you and records which storage the route file went to. INVIA also lists what is already on the Oregon beside your own library, so you see both in one place.

Garmins that never mount as a drive#

The same Device page connects Garmins that never mount as a drive, which include the Zumo XT, the Tread family, the GPSMAP 67 and the eTrex SE. INVIA sends files to those models over the media transfer protocol, from a browser tab, and INVIA is the only web application outside Garmin that does this. An Oregon 600 series or an Oregon 700 series does not need that path, so Mac workarounds written for those models do not apply to an Oregon.

If you own one of those models, press File transfer (MTP) on the same status card instead of USB drive, because nothing mounts on your computer for the drive path to find. INVIA's model guide, which opens from Which one is my Garmin? on the Device page, lists the Zumo XT and XT2, the Tread, Tread 2 and Tread XL in that group. It lists the Montana 710, 710i and 760i, the GPSMAP 67 and 67i, and the eTrex SE and eTrex Solar in the same group. If you are not sure which way yours connects, plug it in and watch your computer, since what appears tells you which button to press. A drive or folder appearing means you press USB drive, and nothing appearing means you press File transfer (MTP).

What you need#

• Chrome or Edge, over a secure connection. They are the only browsers that let a web page open a drive, which is how INVIA reaches the Oregon with nothing else installed.
• On a Mac, nothing extra. An Oregon needs no other software.
• On Windows, INVIA Bridge. Windows claims the Oregon with its own driver first, so this small free background application, installed once, lets the browser reach the Oregon. The Bridge is what INVIA uses on Windows for every Garmin, including an Oregon that mounts as a drive, so a drive appearing in File Explorer does not remove the Bridge step.
• Everything else on INVIA works in any browser.

You do not need BaseCamp or Garmin Express to put a route file on an Oregon, because Garmin Express handles maps and software updates rather than GPX transfer.
